Stay Out of Trouble by Using Special Characters in Your Microsoft® Documents

NOTE: As always, my directions apply to MS Office® 2007; earlier versions may not be exactly the same. If using an older version, click on the Help link at the top of your program or go to www.microsoft.com to access MS's own tutorials.

Think of how often we use trademarks - registered or not - in our everyday life.

We use Scotch tape® to seal a bulky envelope, and adjust the Velcro® closures on our running shoes. And who doesn't pass the box of Kleenex® when we catch the common cold?

It's one thing to use these trademarks - either registered or not (being the difference between the ® and the ™) - in our speech, but quite another to refer to the company name or logo in print without their legal registration or trademark symbol.

Don't risk legal action (yes, it's certainly possible) or at the least, your professional reputation, by leaving out the trademark or registered symbol.

It's so easy, and it works - of course - for lots more symbols than just these two.

Insert them in Excel®, PowerPoint®, Publisher® and the Outlook Editor®.

For this example, we'll insert the ® symbol in a Microsoft Word® document as follows:
  • Put your cursor at the spot immediately following the brand name (no space between them);
  • Click on the Insert tab at the top of the Word® program;
  • Click on Symbol, and click on the ® symbol from the group offered, or choose More Symbols if needed.
And for those of you who love those shortcut keys and use lots of brand names in your text, try the Ctl-Alt-R sequence to speed up the process.

Here's to saving time, and staying out of jail.
Products I Like

External Hard Drives and Flash Drives Can Cure Your Insomnia

This month, the product I like and share with you is not brand-unique, because there are many good ones out there.

I'm referring to the external hard drive that lets you go to sleep at night not worrying about a computer crash.

I'm also talking about those small storage/transfer devices known as flash drives, thumb drives, USB drives, pen drives, jump drives... there are about as many different names as there are different ones.

Before I continue, let me make this disclaimer...

I am not saying your computer will never crash nor will you ever lose your backup system.

I'm simply stating a fact. If you store a second copy of your important documents and emails, it allows you to sleep more soundly at night.

Retail stores often advertise sales on these devices - both the large external hard drives which store beaucoups of photos, documents, and about anything else you have on your computers, as well as the small portable and handy flash drives.

In September of 2009, I purchased an 8 GB flash drive for $17. Very handy. I'm able to transfer photos en masse when I want to take them with me to share with others.

In November of 2008, I purchased my external hard drive and I back up regularly.

Remember that tiny little spiral-bound notepad we talked about in the 5/7/09 Tip of the Week? To refresh your memory, read it right now on the Archives page at T5MBB website ... Just right-click the link to Open).

These devices offer you document and photo protection for a very reasonable price. Since additional storage and backup is so commonly found, you can get some for a steal if you keep an eye out for sales.

November and December are coming fast, and with them, the holiday bargains. If you're not in a rush, consider buying an external hard drive for your business or personal needs soon.

And - um - sleep well.
